Given almost every inch of the frame, Gyllenhaal is fantastic.

On the other hand, sitting right on the brink of a nervous breakdown gives Joe an obsessive edge that focuses all of his anger into trying to crack the case – phoning in old favours and trying everything he can to calm an impossible situation before he unravels completely. In short, Joe is the worst possible person who could have picked up Emily’s call.

Estranged from his wife and daughter, fried from lack of sleep, he sits angrily crushing an asthma inhaler as he counts down the hours before he stands trial for police brutality.

To make things worse, the bigger emergency is Joe himself. Working out that she’s been abducted, he starts trying to piece together the information he needs to try and rescue her. When Emily (Riley Keough) phones in and starts pretending to talk to an imaginary child, Joe almost hangs up before he realises that she’s trying to cry for help without someone else overhearing. Set during the chaos of the 2020 California wildfires, the lines are buzzing with tragedies and horrors and cranks from all over the burning city. It’s 2am in the middle of a hectic (but weirdly empty) emergency call centre and Joe Baylor (Gyllenhaal) is manning the switchboard. Feeling similar to the 2013 Halle Berry thriller, The Call, Fuqua manages to avoid that film’s pulpy pitfalls by keeping his story in one room – crafting a taught 90 minutes entirely out of close-ups on Gyllenhaal’s sweaty face. Next, then, comes The Guilty – a tense police drama shot on a single set over 11 days while the director sat quarantined in a minivan outside.Ĭlosely adapted from the 2018 Danish thriller of the same name, director Antoine Fuqua ( Training Day) and writer Nic Pizzolatto ( True Detective) move the action from Copenhagen to Los Angeles, with Jake Gyllenhaal starring as a fragile 9/11 operator trying to help a kidnapped woman on the other end of a phone line. The White Lotus was rushed into production because it could all be filmed in the same Hawaiian bubble, Host was shot entirely over Zoom and Malcolm & Marie only got green-lit because no one had to leave the house. If you loved the terrific Swedish original, writer Nic Pizzolatto’s adaptation may feel a little too photocopied, but banish it from your mind and you’re in for a wild time.Silver linings have obviously been few and far between over the last few years, but one welcome result of the 2020 lockdown has been Hollywood’s sudden love for small-scale, stripped-back dramas. Seizing you from the outset, The Guilty refuses to let go until you’re gasping for breath. If director Antoine Fuqua thoroughly flubbed his remake of The Equalizer, he properly sticks the landing here. Also keep an ear out for cameos from Ethan Hawke and Peter Sarsgaard. Keough, in a (literally) quieter role, also commands in a vocal performance that’s never anything less than viscerally present. It’s a role reminiscent of other classics of the actor-on-the-phone thriller subgenre, Colin Farrell in Phone Booth and Tom Hardy in Locke, but Gyllenhall also brings shades of a ruffled Raymond Chandler-like antihero.

He’s great as this not entirely likeable man who may even have ulterior motives for riding to the rescue.

So, is it the superior spin? Let’s put it this way, if you come to this Netflix remake first, you are going to be blown away by a hurricane-force performance from Gyllenhaal. To say too much more would be to spoil the film’s savage twists and turns. He goes above and beyond the call of duty – obsessively so – to piece together what appears to be a horrifying unfolding case of domestic violence.

Her plight somehow manages to pull Joe out of his worst tendencies. Instead, we are drawn into a kind of filmed radio drama as a whispering caller ( Zola star Riley Keough) gets through in a state of panic and distress. None too happy about the situation, he’s passive (and not so passive) aggression personified in a 911 call centre during the California wildfires.Ī social distancing film for our times, there are few other on-screen roles to pull focus from Joe. Gyllenhaal plays Joe, a cop who has been removed from active duty for reasons we are not immediately privy to. With its one-room set up and a supporting cast that’s heard but not seen, it leans hard on the actor’s screen presence and he doesn’t disappoint. There is snobby idea that US remakes of European movies invariably represent a step down in quality, but The Guilty captures the absolute thrill ride of the 2018 Swedish film of the same name, lit up by a bang-on-form Jake Gyllenhaal.
